Art journal materials

What are the basic materials you need to MAKE and USE your art journal? If you look at the tutorials (like the ones I shaded with you yesterday) you’d think you need a room full of art supplies to make a single art journal page. Stencils, all kinds of paints, die-cuts, artist designed cut-outs, beautiful stamps with stamp pads in all the colours of the rainbow, gelatos, Pitt pens, markers, fine liners, gel pens… and the list goes on and on…but it doesn’t have to be that way! There’s nothing wrong with using what we’ve got – be it a lot or a little. If you have the means and/or the supplies, go at it and enjoy them – that’s what they were created for!

But if you don’t have all those supplies, please, don’t despair – you can make a lot of art and have tons of fun with just the basics that your kiddo will drag home from school – and if you don’t have kids, these supplies will cost you less than 20 bucks.
Here is what you will truly need for a summer full of art and laughter:

  • Drawing paper – I use the kids’ grade that is leftover from school
  • Recycled cardboard for the cover – pasta and cereal boxes work great
  • Paper bag – from bread, grocery, etc
  • Some old white PVA glue (i.e. wood glue, school glue)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Eraser

And for decoration:

  • watercolours – kids watercolours work just fine for these projects
  • a cheap synthetic brush or two
  • a jar of water
  • a rag for wiping the brushes
  • * pressed leaves, die cuts or kids artwork, magazine cut outs,… whatever you fancy if you intend to use them
Art journals are so much fun!
